The solar math for a tiny home is very different from a full-size house. Here's how to size a system that actually works — with real costs and what to avoid.

One of the appeals of a tiny home is the possibility of going off-grid — no electric bill, energy independence, the satisfaction of running your life on sunlight. Solar is genuinely achievable for a small structure. But the sizing math trips up a lot of buyers, and an undersized system makes daily life miserable.

Step 1: Know Your Energy Consumption

Before sizing anything, you need to know how many watt-hours per day your tiny home will consume. Here's a realistic breakdown for a 150–250 sq ft cabin used as a primary residence:

The HVAC problem

Step 3: Battery Storage

Batteries store solar energy for use at night and on cloudy days. Lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries are the current standard — they're safe, long-lasting (3,000–5,000 cycles), and perform in temperature extremes better than lead-acid.

For a 1,200W system producing ~6,000 Wh/day in good conditions, you want enough battery storage to cover 1–2 days of minimal consumption (~2,000–4,000 Wh usable). A pair of 100Ah 24V LiFePO4 batteries gives you about 4,800 Wh usable — adequate for most setups.

For a 1,200W system, a 40–60A MPPT charge controller and a 2,000W pure sine wave inverter are the right sizes. Budget $200–$400 for the charge controller and $300–$600 for the inverter.
