Best Insulation by Location

Floor

Rigid foam board between or below joists. R-19 minimum. Cover with plywood decking. For pier foundations, add a layer of rigid board under the entire floor deck for continuous coverage.

Walls

Mineral wool batts in stud cavities + thin rigid foam on exterior for thermal bridging. Or closed-cell spray foam for maximum R-value in minimum thickness.

Roof (most critical)

Closed-cell spray foam between rafters (R-6/inch) + rigid foam board above sheathing if budget allows. Target R-38 minimum for cold climates, R-30 for mild. Don't skimp here.

Do log cabin kits need additional insulation?

Yes. Allwood-style log kits have good thermal mass but the logs themselves only achieve R-1 to R-1.5 per inch — a 44mm log wall is about R-3. For year-round living, add interior rigid foam panels or build a secondary insulated wall layer inside the logs.
