Tiny Home Insurance — What You Need & What It Costs

2026 · 10 min read · Updated August 2026
Standard homeowner's insurance won't cover most tiny homes. Here's exactly what you need for your structure type.

In This Guide

  1. THOW Insurance
  2. Foundation Insurance
  3. Cost Breakdown
  4. Best Providers

THOW Insurance

A THOW needs RV insurance when moving and dwelling coverage when parked. Best providers: National General (agreed value), Foremost, Progressive (full-time living).

Foundation Build Insurance

If your build has a CO, standard homeowner's insurance may work. Without a CO, use a dwelling fire policy or specialty coverage.

Cost Breakdown

TypeAnnual Cost
THOW (RV policy)$800–$1,500
Foundation (with CO)$500–$1,200
Cabin/kit (fire policy)$400–$900
Always get replacement cost coverage — not actual cash value. A depreciated payout won't cover rebuilding costs.
